Losing someone close to you is one of the most painful feelings you will ever experience.

You feel like your heart is being ripped out of your chest, you can't breathe, you can't cry because you're all cried out and you're just in shock.

You keep thinking that any second now you will see them walk in through the door and hug and kiss you like they used to.

Unfortunately, I am speaking from experience. Just over a year ago I lost the most important person to me. She was my rock, my strength and my support. She guided me and gave me advice. She was always there for me. My grandma was the most beautiful soul in my life and within seconds she was gone. She was ill, and I knew she would pass but nothing could have prepared me for that pain.

Nothing can prepare you for that pain.

Sometimes I look around at the ones I love and I cannot comprehend living without them. The sad fact is, the world keeps spinning and eventually you have to continue with your life.

It's terrifying.

But I have never read a book that encapsulates that feeling of grief.

Until this one.

Ida, always is the true story of two polar bears in New York Zoo. They do everything together, they are best friends. Until one of the bears falls ill.
This story teaches us about losing someone you love but also about living after that and dealing with that pain.

Yes it is a children's book but it reminded me about the ones I lost. Yes it's painful and it hurts but you honour them my remembering all the things you did together, things they would say that would make you laugh, small inconsequential details that for you mean everything.

But isn't grief a bit too morbid for a children's books? No definitely not.

Death does not differentiate in age before it takes someone you love, and I genuinely think that this story was explained so well that it would speak to everyone.

I was just so moved by the book. Undoubtedly one of the best children's books I have read. I would highly highly recommend you buy this books and read it to your children, and even if you don't have children read it to yourself.  The authors do such a brilliant job in conveying such a simple and basic truth so beautifully.

Losing someone is something every single one of us will go through at some stage in our life. At that point it's important to have someone to tell you that everything will be okay eventually. And that is exactly what this book does; it gives you perspective even when the future seems bleak.

On a very serious note, if you have lost someone you love and you are feeling lost and out of your depth, talk to someone you love and trust. You would be amazed at what a hug and a shoulder to cry on can achieve.
