Sports has never been my forte. I don't watch sports, I don't play sports and I definitely don't read sports.
But I am all for supporting women who are making a difference.
And this is exactly what this story is about.
Miss Mary reporting is a simple book with pictures for children but it also teaches an important story about a woman fighting for what she wanted to talk about.
Mary was one of the first female sportswriters and to stand up in a male-dominated environment was really important. She was also one of the first sportswriters to report on people of African-American descent because she felt that everybody deserves a chance to have their story told.
At the end of the book, a boy describes Mary by saying that she doesn't care who you are or where you're from or what you are if you do something she will write about you and I think that's the best way to keep it.
I personally think the story of empowerment, equality and tolerance is a lesson that can't be taught any sooner. Especially in this day and age where understanding different people and fighting for what you believe in is so important.
The pictures are bright, the words are simple and honestly, I would read this to my children to inspire them and work hard
