Although I might be a fan of historical fiction, books that were published before I was born are not ones I usually pick up.

Don't get me wrong, there are some brilliant writers; Charles Dickens, John Steinbeck, the Austen's, all amazing writers, brilliant minds, but their writing style doesn't appeal to me. I would only pick up their books because of an academic reading list, and since academia doesn't need me to read fiction, I avoid it.

A very wise person recently told me that avoiding things is something I should avoid. Which is one of the reasons why I love this read harder challenge, taking you out of your comfort zone and expanding your reading is the best way to gain perspective.

Now, more about the book.

Sherlock Holmes is a very famous detective who is known for his powers of deduction. He's been portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch who have both done brilliant jobs representing him. However, it's never as good as the book.

A Study In Scarlet is one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes novels. This case involves a mysterious murder of an American.  I don't want to say too much but honestly, this was so brilliantly written! I did predict correctly who the killer was, however, I could never have guessed the circumstances behind the killing or where the story would take me. The deductions made by Sherlock may seem extreme but once explained they make so much sense!

The writing was simple, easy to understand but descriptive which meant you were able to imagine the world that was being painted for you. At only 109 pages it was a quick read with an intricate story that kept me hooked!

Sherlock Holmes is such a brilliant character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and is easily one of my favourite detectives. He is so well rounded but also imperfect which makes him more human and I love that. I cannot wait to continue reading the series and reading more about his adventures.
