Marco & Carl

When you live far away, catch ups are so important, and good food with these catch ups is fundamental!

One of Leicester's newest Italian themed restaurant,  Marco & Carl serve a wide range of burgers, pizzas and other Italian classics.

Now let's get down to business....the food!!

For drinks, we ordered some virgin cocktails; a zesty mojito and a refreshingly sweet Cosmo (my favourite!)

We started off with the Gombero Prawns and Piccante Bread. The prawns were so succulent and the gombero sauce finished the dish off with a nice kick. Although the bread was cooked beautifully, it had pizza type flavours which didn't add anything to the dish. Honestly, the dish would have been a lot better if it was just kept simple; that beautifully baked bread with some butter and some garlic would have pulled it up a notch. Also, the fact that there were only 4 small prawns was a bit of a downer.

Alongside the prawns, we also had some garlic bread with mozzarella. More naan like than bread. I don't know about you guys, but I am always disappointed when the garlic bread comes like a pizza. Bread is bread and pizza is pizza. Keep them separate!!!

For mains, I had the gombero filleto de Pollo which was a grilled chicken fillet covered in that spicy gombero sauce. It was served with roquito mash and sauteed vegetables. The chicken was very flavourful because of the sauce however it was a bit dry -  I guess that's a risk you have to take when you order a grilled chicken fillet. The roquito mash was so yummy! The heat from the smoky chillies combined with the smooth mashed potato meant that I devoured it! I love vegetables but these were overcooked and soggy, so I pushed them to the side of my plate.

For sides, we shared some spicy rice and crunchy cassava chips. Be warned....the spicy rice is insanely spicy; I would rename it "mouth-on-fire rice"

The girls had the Mumbai chicken burrito wrap and the Pollo Milanese infonare which was a chicken breast topped with a tomato sauce and mozzarella and served with baby potatoes. All got pretty positive reviews.

I think I would say Marco and Carl does flavourful food, although their standard does seem to slip when they get busy. That wouldn't bother me so much if the prices weren't so steep. I would definitely go back....if someone else was paying. The food is good but not worth the price you are paying.
